Love, one of the world’s leading authorities on voice, says the words we say hardly matter at all. The sound of our voices and the way we make people feel are infinitely more important. He shows us how to harness the power of the single most powerful communication tool we have: the voice. Roger Love has coached award winning actors, musicians and speakers, from Jeff Bridges and Reese Witherspoon for their Academy Award-winning roles in Crazy Heart and Walk The Line, to Gwen Stefani and Eminem, to Anthony Robbins and Brendon Burchard. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
Can you actually learn to sing from the Diaphragm? I don’t think there’s a singer alive who hasn’t been told to ‘sing from the diaphragm!’ But what does that mean, and more importantly, is it an instruction you should even take any notice of? Download Dr Dan's Singing Exercises – http://drdan.co/exerciseCD 0:20 What is the Diaphragm? the diaphragm is a rather large muscle, the second largest in your body actually, that literally separates your thoracic cavity, containing your heart and lungs, from your abdominal cavity the lower half of your torso. The diaphragm has a dome shape and is often labelled as having two divisions: left and right. 1:20 Can we learn to sing from the Diaphragm? When you exhale, the diaphragm is, for the most part, passive. That’s right, at the very moment when you are creating sound, the diaphragm is inactive. When you follow this fact to its logical conclusion, it’s an anatomical impossibility, to ‘sing from the diaphragm.’ It simply can’t be done. 3:42 Breath Management Exercise Allow me to give you can exercise that is designed to empower you with a heightened sense of kinesthetic awareness. I often refer to this exercise as developing a biological fuel gauge for the singer. Imagine driving a car with no fuel gauge. You’d literally be driving along fully expecting the car to run out of petrol at any moment. This, in turn, is probably going to cause you to pull into the gas station far more frequently…probably more than you need to. -- Thumbnail Reference -- https://www.flickr.com/photos/1219359... –––––––––––––––––––––––– Welcome to Voice Essentials where everybody sings. Hi there, it’s Matt from VoiceHacker. We do voice coaching over Skype. Today, we’re talking about breathing. How most people get it wrong, and about one little secret I couldn’t find anywhere else on YouTube. Let’s get into it. Breathing is important. We live in a rather stressful time. And, as Stacey Schuerman says, you’ve got a tool to help you out. Breathing can help to manage feelings of anxiety and stress. Even Sesame street knows it. I’ve been teaching for 5 years, and I don’t think I’ve gone a day without talking about breathing. But why is it so important? You might have heard of the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism. It’s the “oh my god there’s a tiger in that bush” thing. It’s a good thing, sometimes, when you need to run away from tigers. But other stressful situations can put you in that mode. So your body needs to chill out - and it uses the ‘rest and digest’ mode to do it. Rest and digest lets us unwind - to stop seeing tigers around every *AH!*. And you can unwind using breathing. But why does just ‘breathing’ work? Well, it’s thanks to the vagus nerve. No, not the ‘vegas’ nerve. The ‘vagus’ - Anyway, it’s the wandering nerve. And it means that when your brain receives bad signals from the belly, it starts hitting fight or flight. So when you’re breathing anxiously… So that means there’s a good way to breathe, and a bad way to breathe. The bad way uses the neck and shoulders. And breathing in this bad way is very common. In fact, if I was to ask you to breathe in. Right now. A bit more. A bit more!! And relax. Your shoulders probably went upwards when you breathed in, and then dropped. In other words, you breathed wrong. So how do we breathe ‘right’? Well, we need to breathe with the diaphragm. When we breathe in, it’s supposed to go down. The biggest part of our lungs are at the bottom, so we need to drop the diaphragm to inflate them. But there’s a problem - all your organs and viscera are in the way. They’re just below the diaphragm, stopping it from dropping. So we need to get them out of the way for a sec. That means as we breathe in, we need to inflate the belly. Inflating the belly shifts the organs, and gives the diaphragm space to drop. This is singing teacher Eric Arceneaux doing it. Notice his shoulders are dead still. 5 stars. Breathe in, belly out. Breathe out, belly in. Simple. But I’ve got one little secret that totally changed the way I taught people how to breathe. Most teachers teach breathing like this: you breathe in first, And then you exhale. With lots of counting. Voice teachers like counting. But the trouble is, if you tell someone to just ‘breathe in’, they’ll breathe into their chest. Look at these poor Sesame street kids. Some producer has asked them to breathe in, and they did it the only way they knew how. This happens all the time, as Belisa Vranich says: Remember how I got you to breathe badly, just before? All I asked you to do was to breathe in! Your bad habits are so ingrained that any time I get you to breathe in, you breathe in badly! The secret is to do the opposite. Breathe. Out. First. And remember: next time you feel stressed, or anxious, or need to take a deep breath: Breathe. Out. First. Thanks for watching. Now you know the simple secret of how to speak from the diaphragm here's how to develop a voice that attracts women:
Most people think they have a voice and that's just the way it is. They hear stories about "the diaphragm" or how singers use "techniques" to be able to sing, but they rarely consider that they themselves could adapt those same techniques in some way because we just have this idea of "just having a voice".
But what would happen if you actually COULD improve your voice to make it more resonant, more powerful, more relaxed, less strained, more beautiful, more manly....more attractive?
It would make everything easier every time you open your mouth. I am not just talking about women (for whom voices are a big deal by the way) I am also talking about your job, the impact you have on people, how much people actually listen to you, how much they want to be around you, how much success you'll have in life in communicating your ideas.
How much more confident would having a more effortlessly powerful voice make you? How much more powerful would you feel?
I know I have changed myself through changing my voice on a deep level...and in this video you'll discover the most intuitive way of making your voice more powerful, resonated and confident sounding I've come across in over 15 years of developing my voice.
So ignore this simple technique, or take it and run with it. Either way you're going to get the results you deserve. :-)
