Our drive up the west coast of Iceland, including lots of puffins.
The island of Heimaey, just off the coast of Iceland, is a breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins. But the colorful birds are not as plentiful here as they once were. Scientists say their numbers have been down by a third or more just since 2002. And one threat to the puffins is the local fishing village's bright lights, which can confuse young pufflings and draw them away from their nocturnal feeding ground. Enter the Puffling Patrol - young children who volunteer to rescue lost birds. Lee Cowan pays a visit. Spectacularly close up views of puffins at Elliston, Newfoundland. Video taken at the well-known Puffin Viewing Site, one of the closest places to view puffins on land. Also, amazing video of the Scenic Maberly Loop that begins at the Puffin Site. For more on Elliston see www.townofelliston.ca.
Around 10.000 to 15.000 Puffins live in Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjordur Eystri.
The "Hafnarhólmi" in Borgarfjörður Eystri is an area highly suitable for birdwatching. On the premises there is a staircase leading up to a platform where one can get closer to puffins and the birds of the sea than ever imaginable. The puffins arrive in April and disappear overnight around August 15th.
Underway to Hafnarhólminn one enjoys good close-ups of vivid birdlife and the artic tern nests along the shore and on banks of the river. The harbor proudly raises the blue flag indicating that the inhabitans are respectful and attentive towards their surroundings.
