Slightly late running 24-coacher "PRIDE-OF-BENGAL / शान-ए-बंगाल" 12343 Sealdah-New Jalpaiguri Jn. 'Darjeeling Mail / দার্জিলিং মেল' enters it's final destination NJP of NorthEast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone in the state of West Bengal behind an awesome looking long hood forward, imported WDP4 numbered #20004 homed at Siliguri (SGUJ) Diesel Loco Shed nicknamed as "BAAZ / बाझ" meaning 'Falcon' in english. This legendary SuperFast train has been serving public from pre-independence era. The odds were fully in my favor, as this was the first capture of the day as well as of my visit to NFR, as I finished my breakfast & entered the platform just in time :-D Bloody lucky I was, as my day begun with this amazing spotting !!! Announcement of departure of 55749 NJP-Haldibari UR Passenger at 9:15 A.M. can be heard in Bengali language. Check out my video of outgoing 12344 Darjeeling Mail departing from NJP pulled by SGUJ's WDP4B on same day in evening... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIh2A65oZHU
Konark Sun Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Surya, what remains of the temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone. Once over 200 feet high, much of the temple is now in ruins, in particular the large shikara tower over the sanctuary; at one time this rose much higher than the mandapa that remains. It is one of the three Mountain Railways of India, along with Kalka-Shimla Rail and Nilgiri mountain Rail that are designated a UNESCO world heritage site status. It is interesting that the three living heritage railway lines are located in 3 different corners of the country. While Darjeeling Himalayan Railways & Shimla-Kalka Rail traverse through the Himalayan Hills, Ooty train traverses through the Nilgiris. The 2 prime reasons for inclusion of Mountain Railways of India in UNESCO world heritage sites include: Excellence in Engineering - You have to see the Batasia loop on the Darjeeling-Ghum track to understand what it means. These trains go uphill and at places the gradient is too steep for train to pull. Engineers working on the Railway systems devised an innovation that included building loops or zig zag tracks so that the length of the track increases and the gradient can be gradually increased . This also makes the train ride very smooth for the riders. So, it is the technical genius that the homage goes to. DARJEELING HIMALAYAN RAILWAY GOES FROM AN ELEVATION OF 100 METERS TO 2200 METERS IN JUST ABOUT 78 KMS. Impact on socio-economic life – Train connectivity made travel to and from the hills easier. It brought a cultural exchange between the people of hills and plains. This in turn led to exchange of material goods and over a period of time they each influenced and became a part of each other. IT REMAINS A WONDER THAT THE TRAIN SYSTEM IS WORKING STILL AFTER 135 YEARS AND SERVING THE PEOPLE OF THE REGION. Take a look of at this Darjeeling Himalayan railway journey. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the Toy Train, is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal, India. Built between 1879 and 1881, the railway is about 78 kilometres (48 mi) long. Its elevation level varies from about 100 metres (328 ft) at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling. Four modern diesel locomotives handle most of the scheduled services; however the daily Kurseong-Darjeeling return service and the daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum (India's highest railway station) are handled by the vintage British-built B Class steam locomotive, DHR 778.
