West Coast Wild - Hiking the Juan de Fuca Trail

The Juan de Fuca Trail may not be as familiar a name as the world famous West Coast Trail, but if you ask us this is a good thing. Its relative obscurity means that it is a much less crowded, yet equally stunning way to experience Vancouver Island's ruggedly idyllic West Coast. The Juan de Fuca trail boasts some seriously challenging terrain, but without the extensive ladder and boardwalk network of its more famous sibling. This, in our opinion, makes the experience feel more organic and creates a deeper connection between hiker and trail. Point, Juan de Fuca. We started our 4 night trek on August 11, 2016, during the peak of the Perseid Meteor Showers and were treated to a clear night sky we won't soon forget. The rest of the trip was a mixed bag of typical West Coast weather - sun, fog, rain, repeat. All in all, it was a highly enjoyable and highly recommendable trip. To celebrate Canada's 150th birthday I set out on a 3 day, 330km bike trip using the newly connected "Great Trail" as my road. I was able to ride from Downtown Victoria to Nitinat Lake on Vancouver Island's West Coast with barely 30 minutes spent on pavement. Using the tiny community of Caycuse on the far end Lake Cowichan as my base camp I could travel ultra lite and focus on enjoying my time in the saddle, taking in the unrivalled beauty that this island has to offer.

The ride back was split between between trail and road, skirting Shawnigan Lake and crossing the beautiful Saanich Inlet by ferry, before finishing my trip with a short climb up to the Victoria Observatory in West Saanich. Vancouver Island truly is a gem.
